The Family of Man, an extraordinarily ambitious photographic exhibition that in ways was like a magazine-style collage, utilizing 503 photographs (from 273 photographers) culled from some two million, stressed the similarities among peoples and their rituals and desires, intentionally glossing over many of their differences. Curated by Steichen, and with assistance by Miller, the exhibition opened at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1955 and traveled worldwide; the book of the same name would sell millions of copies.
